The head of the NY firefighters union was on Bill O'Reilly's cable TV show last night. What's driving these firefighters (and triggering their emotions) is a strong desire to recover the remains of all their fallen comrades in a dignified manner ... as opposed to having all the debris loaded onto dump trucks, and then searching for body parts on Staten Island.

I understand Giuliani's point of view. He wants the site cleaned up ASAP so the rebuilding process can proceed.

However, I'm not sure Giuliani has properly gauged the depth of feelings the firefighters have for their 340 fallen brothers.

Surely a compromise can be worked out.

3 shifts of 25. Reality is that the debris field has shrunken to a much smaller area. Thus you cannot schedule machine and man to work at the same time in different places. Also Bodies are starting to rot and taking extra week will mean remains are just that much more decayed. Is this a biological health hazzard?

This is a pile of rubble with ground up human remains that are decaying. And the cost of recovery is real and time adds to that cost.

The mayor in my opinion has done what was required. Some will always object if it does not go their way. The mayor is being diplomatic and doing what is right.

I hear the fire guys making all these emotional the sacred remains and such arguments. Fact, it's shrunk, it's dangerous for humans and machines to work together and the remains are a health hazard.

I think of the poor guy running the equipment. How does he feel if he kills another.
