Flap yes it was a problem but look it is always the Democrats who want status quo and thrive under vague complex laws. In essence I believe the Democrats like the idea of every person being a potential law-breaker so they can target them when they want to. It is a vulgar statement of law to say that I owe you money and that you don't tell me what I owe but if I make a mistake in figuring out what I owe you, you might punish me or even put me in jail.

Even a flat tax can have a graduated system. But remember that under Forbes plan the poor and middle class pay nothing in taxes. That's what the Dems always state they want. But I don't really believe they do. Three years ago the IRS went after a waitress who made 12K a year. She was single. They wanted her to pay 4k in penalties claiming that her 10 % declaration in tips was false. The judge threw the case out. She claimed that the people in her poor area gave only 10 % not 15 % in tips. Where was the ACLU and all the other civil rights people ? Out to lunch as usual

I cannot fathom what a small-businessman must go through. It must be a nightmare. I just had to pay $600 to the state because I screwed up my '97 state return ... put down the figure from line 37 instead of line 27. About $250 of that $600 was interest/penalties.

I am a small business owner, and I would not consider managing my taxes alone. We employ the services of an accounting firm out of necessity, and I would highly recommend all small business do the same. We are not capable of deciphering tax code.

It is. Moenmac is right about hiring a CPA or tax specialist. This year the IRS said I had to reclassify what had been called "cost of goods sold" to "cost of raw materials" amongst other descriptors on my income statements. This is of course just tax code.

There's employment practices and labor law. (most of us now must carry insurance). Changing health code enforcement.

This aspect of business I think is probably the biggest reason most business startups fail. Few really appreciate the amount of work it takes to run a small business. They underestimate the work and overestimate the money.
