You don't sound so ignorant to me, so I'm addressing this question to you.

If you click on a link and it says something like "downloading 7 Megs" and you download and look at it, and over months do that with many different links, isn't there clutter someplace on your hard drive you could eliminate for the sake of good housekeeping?

I went to temporary internet files to see if I could find one I had just looked at

dorfchemnitz.de

(Don't go to it unless you are prepared to feel very bad, it is about September 11, and is painful.)

to try to find it, to help me figure out how to remove these items I just view once, but there was nothing there that looked like it was that link.

How stupid is this question? No need to lie, I am strooong.

'internet' turns spellchecker red.

I'm sorry I don't know a thing about networking. Did you click on the help button on the advanced security settings page? Looks like there may be some info there that might help you. You might try lowering your local security settings to low and see if that helps.

As far as those programs or services that try to connect to the internet are concerned, I have spent some time trying to figure out what they do and have not come up with much. Go to run and type in services.msc and you will see a list of the local services and a brief description of each. Go to the action menu and click on help and it will give you more info. I have several processes that listen to various ports that I have no clue about and can't find out anything. That generic Host process loads three times on my machine (according to ZA) and if I do not give it permission I am cut off from the net. Here's a link with some more info but when I tried this guy's settings I was blocked from the net again. I had to restore the default settings and everything seems to be ok.

Bob,
First try uninstalling the NIC on the XP machine then reboot
without it, shut down, then reinstall it. If that doesn't work
try this on the XP machine, on the Local Zone security
page where you only have the adopter subnet checked click
the Add tab then add the names and IP addresses of the
other 2 PCs on the network. If you don't know the IP
addresses on the ME boxes, Start> Run type "winipcfg"
click OK. I also have 3 PC networked with Zonealarm on all
3. I have the IP addresses of the other 2 PCs added and checked
on all 3 PCs. I keep Local Security set at Medium. I give
nothing Server permission, I keep Generic Host Process for
Win32 Services set to ask on all permissions then click no
when it makes a request. If that causes a problem I then
give it permission for that one instance. I have SNMP set
the same but don't remember it ever making a request. If you
want/need to put the IP addresses of the other PCs on the
Win ME PCs you'll need the IP address of the XP PC. From a
dos prompt type ipconfig then hit enter.

Hope that solves your problem, SfkaJB

Bob,
Your post got me to thinking so I tried an experiment.
I deleted the IP addresses of the other 2 PCs on each
of my 3 PCs on the Zone Alarm Local Security page and my
network still works fine so the steps in my last post aren't
necessary.

Hope you didn't waste any time with my suggestion, SfkaJB.
