Then you should know that programmers have available to them multiple tools that can compile code and generate statistics about the number of branches, the size of the code in instructions, and even give you tips on how to optimize. Intel has one such tool called VTune. Tools like this mean that the programmers don't necessarily need intimate hardware knowledge to optimize their code.
