Actually, you responded to that post.

There was a time, back before the Republican Party was hijacked by the Christian Right, when civil liberties were on of the mainstays of the party. Now they often seem a side issue, or no issue at all, for both parties. (Does anyone remember that the early civil rights acts had strong Republican support and the opposition was Southern Democrats?)

I don't think anyone questions that a tightening of security is necessary, but that "Patriotic Act" guts the Bill of Rights. Hopefully the USSC will remember its duty and save us from at least its worst feature.
