"affect". I too have had problems with this verb.

My dictionary has a tip...

don't confuse affect with effect. Affect chiefly means "make a difference to", as in the changes will affect everyone. As a verb effect means "bring about a result", as in she effected a cost-cutting exercise.

In both cases.. the stock value of the companies involved go down. It was just people trying to look good. (affected adjective... designed to impress people) -g-

You "effectively" diverted attention and discussion of Lindybill's proffer of how the Washington Post would distort the message. Sorry, but Lindybill's original, "Affected," not "Effected," was correct, and I imagine even news editors know that.

The important point is the media's frequent distortion of news by highlighting and writing the story around selective facts that comport with its own political agenda. Kind of like a story that purports to give a complete update on the war in Afghanistan, but is primarily about the civilian casualties. The story can state accurate facts, but still be terribly misleading. It's dishonest.

Nice diversion. I imagine (and hope) that being an "academic" (from your profile), you knew Lindybill's English was correct, and simply took the opportunity to divert the discussion in another direction, away from criticism of your beloved left-leaning media. Kudos.
