Jacob, Good reply on the question of subsidizing home ownership. Also I agree with Gottfried's reply. I keep getting the ideal world and the real world mixed up.

The next couple of days should be interesting for the Nasdaq and AMAT in particular. Is this a local peak in the market or not? If the market behavior over the last year is any guide, then we are probably going down. However, I recall last year at this time pundits such as Tom Galvin were pounding the table on tech stocks, saying Oct 15 to Mar 15 tends to give big returns in the Nasdaq. So, there was I think a lot of optimism back then. At least at this point there are a lot of people worried about another decline.

If one can time the market or individual stocks even just fairly well, the returns can be enormous. Maybe one way to look at it is to just wait for moments when the odds look favorable, such as was the case in late September. You nailed it on that one. I am just waiting to see what happens here - fully invested right now (plus some margin even), but may lighten up if the timing seems right.
