BRUSSELS, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Discount carrier Virgin Express (VIRGY) said on Wednesday it was not had taken part in fundraising orchestrated by the Belgian government to create a new airline following the demise of Sabena [SAB.UL].

"We were not involved," Virgin Express spokesman Yves Panneels told Reuters. "We are going to focus on our four new routes and the future launch of other routes."

Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt announced his government had raised 200 million euros in private capital to help create a new Belgian airline after flag carrier Sabena filed for bankruptcy.

Brussels-based Virgin Express had been in talks with the government until Tuesday about possibly merging with Sabena's regional subsidiary Delta Air Transport (DAT), but called the plan unworkable and announced it would pursue an independent development strategy instead.

It had nevertheless kept talking with Sabena afterwards. REUTERS
