"Design their RDRAM and go to a fab, such as TSMC or IBM and fab their DRAM..."

And who would make the RIMMs with unbearable trace
tolerances, check test coupons for proper resin quality
and gap filling, do precise chip soldering to avoid
deviations in wave impedance of solder joints, mount
heat spreaders with proper thermal joints, do final RIMM
assembly, test and characterization, manage procurement and
inventory for all this, Uncle Sam?

Of course, almost everything is subcontracted today, but
somebody must assume responsibility for the final consumable
product, with all associated cost and liabilities.
It was not the Rambus.

My point remains unchanged - Rambus has never had an
real option to manufacture anything, so your statement
that they had a choice but acted "philantrophically"
is nonsense.
