It's really not much different from Windows. Compare the capabilities of Win95, Win98, Win98SE, ME, Win2K, Win2K Pro, Win2K Datacenter, and Win XP. Then add all the Service Packs into the mix, and it's very hard to figure out just what constitutes "Windows." That's before you even consider the Itanium. Very confusing for the average consumer.

I personally think the new SUSE distribution is very good, but they're cheap enough you can try several and decide which you like; I believe you can even get combination packs containing several different distributions for less than you'd spend on an XP upgrade.
