How can any message board site make money? I am sure that your question has been discussed endlessly at many dot com boards meetings. I certainly don't have the answer. The basis of any businesses ability to make money is foot traffic or in the case of broadcast data such as TV, Radio or the Internet it is "eyeballs". Eyeballs are drawn to any web site because the content is good. Content is key. Posters are the free content providers for a site such as this. Without going into a detailed discussion of why I think this I will simply state that SI has run off most of it's great posters by means of a series off foolish decisions.

There are only two basic ways: memberships and advertising/sponsorship. The problem isn't necessarily "making money" as much as it is "not losing money". Not losing money requires the site to move past the "guess this might work maybe" to something that actually works. Getting the cheapest but best hosting service, having a tech guy that can fix a problem without having to call 911 and Fox News, that sort of thing. T-shirts and coffee mugs can provide a VERY comfortable living for one or two people if it's a well-run small business. In the case of SI, the original thing that Jeff Dryer designed and Brad Dryer built was better than anything this site has mutated into since GNET bought the site. There are no sites that I know of that don't have goofy mistakes in them. To make a double post on Raging Bull, all you have to do is backspace on your browser twice and click "submit". There are files on SI that members are supposed to have access to that will time out if you try to go there. If a member starts a new thread on SI, you won't see it on his Profile. They "fixed that" years ago. Not to mention the "ongoing beta testing" or whatever they call it when they try to integrate a feature on the site and screw up the code on four pages they were not paying attention to. Seems to me that buying SI would be a waste of money. The only thing left is the logo, and that will be gone as soon as they launch the New Improved Version. What we need is a site that works right. Not just that, but a site that was designed to be clean and simple to navigate on. Something where the graphic designer and the code engineer both had some idea that was somewhat similar. Something new, something better than the original SI. If it were me, that is what I would ask for for Christmas.
