Life continues to imitate art. Gene Roddenberry based his fictional Federation-Klingon rivalry around the real-world U.S.-Soviet rivalry that was in full force at the time and yet painted a path that had the erstwhile enemies eventually becoming friends and allies. The global importance of a reemergent Russia rejoining the world community as a full member and partner cannot be overstated. We are in the midst of an historic shift and it seems clear that Bush and Putin are determined to seize the unique opportunity that the battle against global terrorism has provided them.
