Dell COO says mid-'02 PC rebound a possibility

NEW YORK, Nov 15 (Reuters) - No. 1 computer maker Dell Computer Corp. (NasdaqNM:DELL - news) Chief Operating Officer Kevin Rollins on Thursday said personal computer demand may turn around sometime in the middle of 2002, but it's not a certainty.

``We don't see any change really in the corporate market in terms of a big demand uptick. There's obviously a potential for consumer uptick in Q4 but I think for any overall market turn next year it's still too soon to call,'' Rollins said.

``We do anticipate, or think, there's potential for a late spring or early summer uptick,'' Rollins said.

Speaking to reporters, Rollins also said that Dell will continue the aggressive pricing strategy that has won the company market share in the past year, pushing it to the top spot. Rollins said that average selling prices had dropped a few percentage points in the third quarter and could continue to do so in the fourth.

If that occurs, he said, and if unit shipments do increase about 5 percent in the fourth quarter, then Dell revenues will probably increase 1 or 2 percentage points he said. Dell said in a statement it expects revenues to be up slightly.

Well last year, they went from 8.2 billion to 8.5 billion from October to january quarter. So this year's expected increase is about inline with last year. I don't see anything unusual about their guidance.

I looks to me like last year they went from $8.3 to $8.7, a 5% increase. Last year the January Q was a monstrous Q for them where they had huge increases in share. I would interpret this year's guidance to be a little more sanguine.

RE: Dell says unit shipment up 5% this quarter. Remember that Intel was guiding flat revenues this quarter....

Dell was quite clear that this is the expectation for their business, not the industry's. They said they expect industry unit shipments to be flat this Q.

That's not good for INTC, not good for the memory makers, and not good for the cap equip guys.
