if you're going to be for intervention on behalf of human rights, you need to intervene on behalf of ALL people, not just "strategically important" people.

Bull. That's like saying if you're in a battle zone with a flood of wounded coming in, you need to try to save ALL the injured, not just the ones you have a good chance of being able to help.

It's called the process of triage. It's rarely easy, and it can often seem cruel and arbitrary, but it's something people have to do from time to time.

"it's the economy stupid" they say. they couldn't be more wrong. character and morality should be first and foremost among our elected leaders.

In an ideal world, you'd be spot on. Unfortunately, Earth is not an ideal world, so we have to do what it takes to gain power, or else live under the imposition of the moral codes of those who do.

i would rather republicans or conservatives stand up for their beliefs and lose than move to the left to bring more people into the party.

You should go check out the Libertarian Party (and their thread here on SI). Those people have mastered the art of being true to themselves and irrelevant to everyone else.
