Maui: Funny you didn't ask the same question about AMD shares.
I know, I know, it's because AMD will eat Intels lunch (-:

Both AMD and Intel seem to be experiencing a tightness of availability with their high-end processors. What are the reasons behind this?

a) Unexpectedly high consumer demand?
b) Bin split problems for both?
c) Supply problems from both, e.g. due to .13µ conversion.
d) Supply problems from Intel, causing consumers to buy AMD instead, creating a shortage of AMD parts.
e) Some combination of the above.

(note: The AMD<->Intel transposed version of point "d" is not a possibility, since AMD's volumes are only ~ 1/3 of Intel's)

I actually thought a) was the best explanation, but with Dell reporting that unit shipments for the industry will be flat, that seems an unlikely possibility.

For fear of sounding like Niceguy et. al., "d" seems to be the more realistic possibility. One data point that points against this is AMD's latest CC, where guidance was reiterated (i.e. not guided up).

If I'm missing some possible explanations, please don't hesitate to let me know. Thanks.

re: "Funny you didn't ask the same question about AMD shares."[How can Intel shares go higher?]

Because the post I was responding to (#63816) said:

"the global volume of the new PC sales is expected to rise by only 5% next year to make 129.6 million units..."

Because, on my Yahoo screen, Intel's P/E is 57.

Maybe also because Dell, who made the comment referred to in my post, sells more(!) Intel CPUs than AMD's? And Dell's big business market is also Intel's strong hold, isn't it?

In your post #63840, you write: "...with Dell prediction about unit shipment for Q4 be flat is incorrect."

Wow! Fact: Dell's grasp of the markets is more accurate than yours<g>.
I won't argue further on that one!

"I know, I know, it's because AMD will eat Intels lunch (-:"

Yeah right, with the P4 and the Itanium 'sighting', because of that too!

Mike

PS. I don't think AMD's share will go much higher either,... for now.
