Milo, Re: "The year-on-year drops were nearly the same, with Intel servers down 28.6 percent and Unix off 27.3 percent."

IBM at 30.3% share, up 7.0%
HP at 13.1%, up 0.1%
Compaq at 13.8%, down 1.9%
Dell at 6.4%, down 0.1%
Sun at 13.7%, down 3.6%

Looks like Sun is the big loser here. I wonder what percentage of IBM, HP, and Compaq are Intel based servers. Pretty soon, 100% of Compaq and HP will be Intel, and a very large percent of IBM will be Intel.

I'd say Intel is gaining server market share, and likely to continue gaining.

Check out this SWEET Tom's Hardware story.

tomshardware.com
tomshardware.com

"Summary:
The new benchmarks we ran under Windows XP show that the AMD Athlon XP comes out marginally better than a comparable Intel Pentium 4. While Intel relies on high clock speeds of up to 2000 MHz, AMD's mature chip design gives it an added edge."

"Conclusion: Athlon XP Has The Lead Over Pentium 4"

Also, if I am reading the listing right, using Intel's own iComp benchmark, the Athlon XP is still at the top of this list:

Almost forgot.......
if you're bored, click on this link:

"The Pentium® III Processor ? iCOMP® Index 3.0 Benchmark page has been removed."

Milo,

The year-on-year drops were nearly the same, with Intel servers down 28.6 percent and Unix off 27.3 percent.
dailynews.yahoo.com;

Make sure you paste in only the negative part of the article. You conveniently did not paste this:

Sales of computers running Unix (news - web sites), the most popular high-end operating system, recently have dropped faster than the overall market, while lower-end systems with Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC - news) chips, which typically run Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) Windows or the free Linux (news - web sites) software, were doing relatively well.

The paragraph immediately above sounds exactly like what Otellini has said at the CC and webcast recently, that Intel's server business was picking up, and he's forecasting yearly growth in the 20s percentage wise over the next few years.

Selective picking over of articles is a weasely form of FUD.
