My understanding is that even Saudi's who are employed don't work. Most work in SA is done by nationals of other countries - not Westerners generally, but Pakistanis, Egyptians, etc. so those jobs benefit those workers home countries. SA is not characteristic of most other third world countries though. You'd find a different situation in most other third world countries.

Prior to the oil embargo (1973?), Exxon was getting their oil for 25 cents a barrel. Not bad deal!


Whatever price was paid prior to 1973 is not relevant today. Aramco was nationalized shortly after 1973 and is owned by the Saudi government now not a consortium of international companies.
