SKT tests cdma2000 1x EV-DO
By Tony Chan

South Korea’s biggest cellular operator, SK Telecom, has launched a trial
service using the cdma2000 1x EV-DO platform, or evolution data only –
the next step to the CDMA networking technology that enables data-only
transmissions of up to 2.4 Mbps.

The trial service is available in selected areas of Seoul, Gwacheon and
Anyang.

The service will be supported by terminal devices from a host of
manufacturers. According to SKT, GTRAN will be selling a PC Card wireless
modem for the 1x EV-CO service by December with Samsung and SK
Teletec slated to ship handsets for the platform as early as March next
year.

One service identified for the new service is video, including video
downloads and video telephony.

All three Korean operators are expected to evolve their existing cdma2000
networks to 1x EV-DO and then subsequently to 1x EV-DV, or evolution
data and voice.

KTF, the second largest mobile phone operator, has also started to roll
out 1x EV-DO equipment on, but has no plans to start a commercial
service in the near term while it continues to test the reliability and
stability of the new technology.

Together with LG Telecom, Korea’s number three operator, SKT and KTF
are prepping themselves and their networks up for the World Cup soccer
finals next year, held jointly in Korea and Japan.

All three are expected to launch commercial EV-DO services before the
World Cup finals kick-off in June.
