First, and most important: The Twin Towers of the WTC, the Pentagon, the Cole, the US Embassies....etc. Literally tens of thousands of Americans and citizens of other nations who were here killed and injured. Second: We have approximately 280-285 million people in this country. My guess is that all but a few million are actually citizens. It would be easier, and cheaper to track the non citizens. The INS hasn't even put in the machines to trace the people with green cards since they were given the huge (by their own words) amounts of monies to do just that in the 1990's!!! And their track record of tracking even expired student visas has been abysmal, to say the least. The Unabomber, Tim McVey, Ted Bundy, etc etc were all citizens. The FBI and the police eventually found them and they were brought to justice. Most of the hijackers were in and out of this country many times in a year and a half. Most were not citizens. What were they doing, and why? Could our government find what the hijackers were doing without having to use the FBI and CIA equivalents of other countries? You mentioned re non citizens: They could still buy fertilizer, hijack a plane, or dump something in the reservoir. What's the point of having a card in their wallet? For that matter, unless we have stronger security wherever we have potential problems such as the ones you mentioned....why should ANYONE have a card in their wallet...? And regarding business travelers....What do other countries do? Do all countries have a "free come and go" as one pleases business or not???? Regarding airlines and air travel..... I think you will find that since the scanners were put into the airports in 1976 or so, that there hasn't been a single plane hijacking until Sept 11th. What can be done for all transportation ....? Air and bus and train and car? The statistic I have heard is there are 40,000 deaths in the US via car accidents.....and many, MANY fewer deaths via plane accidents. The problems we face in this country are vast, and it's going to take all citizens everywhere in America to put their thinking caps on and see if they can be helpful with ideas on how and what we can all do to help....
