"Is there any advantage to inventing fairy tales to explain the things we don't know".....

I guess it depends on how old one is. As adults we have given up many of our childhood fantasy and dreams. No more tooth fairies, Easter bunnies, or Santas... I think it's sad not to see the wonder in a leaf, stone or a feather and to always question "wonderment". Of course, a good parent says, " I don't know the answer"...but making magic out of life is a gift. Some make their career into spinning magic like Grimes, Dr. Seuss and Baum. Why are children and adults lining up to see "Harry"? Everything doesn't have to have an answer...doesn't need to be understood.

I still listen in wonder at midnight on Christmas eve to hear the animals talk! Do I believe it happens? Of course not! But I listen in wonder and remember a loving mother who told me that happened.

No matter how many degrees we acquire, some things are believed because we want to be young again or because we just have an inner faith and somehow know that it is true.

Just my thoughts,
Marie

All I would say, Steve, is that the more we admit that there are aspects of our existence that we do not understand, and never will, the less we should be inclined to trash explanations held by others. Religions offer an explanation based on an all-powerful Creator, and while no one has to endorse or adopt that belief, it seems presumptuous to me for people to ridicule it when they have no better explanations to offer.
