If they don't report illegal aliens, I would say that they are committing a crime. It's not like keeping quiet about your neighbor, elected officials and probably even civil servants are sworn to uphold the laws of the country, when they take positions in the government. You can argue about whether or not a person is being civic minded etc etc etc in the neighbor instance, but how does a public official, or someone that works for the government have any "wiggle room"??
