Mani, you think Israeli public would accept removal of most settlements in exchange of destruction of Hamas and other terror groups by Palestinian Authority?

PS Do you think Paletinian Authority has an Authority to destroy terror groups?

It has always been position of all US administrations that settlements are illegal and is an obstacle to piece...The reasoning of the Israeli gvn's (even left-wing/pragmatic like Barak) aside for security reasons that settlements are sort of like offer on a house, conditional. If not accepted in timely manner, it is void..Sort of like the longer Intifada/stalement would continue, the more there is for Palestinians to lose...Sue for piece now. Again if Palestinians were abandon terror, Inbternational Opinion, US primarily would have force Israel to accomodate their aspirations long ago

Curious how each side reads what it wants into the speech. The Israelis have noted the bits where Powell calls on the Palestinians to curb violence and show results, not just words. They also note that the speech offers up the Mitchell Plan as an implementation model. The Mitchell plan says, stop violence first, then return to negotiations.

So reading this speech as a break from previous initiatives seems wishful thinking on the part of the author.
