Actually, the apologists for people like Osama and Alec Baldwin confuse cowardice with bravery. Conversely, I've used the terms appropriately.

I didn't necessarily call you a coward, but in the hypothetical you proposed you would be one if you didn't stand up for your principles. Bringing fear of dogs into the argument is a red herring as you are not violating your own principles or committing an ignoble act by running away from a dog.
