"T, A lot of Congressmen didn't like him from day one. Unfortunately, instead of protesting it in a reasoned way,
they made it a challenge to Dubya. Bad tactic. "

Yes, I guess I just assumed it was all politics as usual and didn't worry about Ashcroft.

Strange that Bush can oppose the federalizing of airport security, which seems to me the obvious way to improve public safety, and then in the name of public safety try to set up secret military courts. Then there's this sophistry about invoking the names of Lincoln and FDR who were acting at moments of far greater danger to the entire country. I trust Powell and Rumsfeld, but the minute I see that Ashcroft thinks he can "protect" me by setting up secret police procedures, and thinks that he knows better than Congress what's best for the country, I sense something that threatens me more than does bin Laden.

There are already people saying cheerfully, "Let's give up some of our rights!"
