Some states use SSN's as drivers license numbers.

Yes, my state is one of them. I was shocked when I discovered that. I assumed it was a violation of something. But it is apparently not. The driver can request that another number be used instead of the SSN. I didn't bother. I never pay by check so it doesn't matter.

I'm sure that those who were originally opposed to the SSN are quite distressed over what has come to pass and may feel violated by it. Just as some people still mourn the demise of blue laws. That doesn't mean, however, that either the current SSN usage or shopping hours are not the legitimate will of the people in this representative democracy.

I have a friend, a former colleague, who is an intelligent and otherwise normal person, who thinks we shouldn't allow organ transplants because she's afraid that someone will take her organs while she is still alive. She also insisted that her SSN not be on her driver's license. Some people just have different thresholds of danger than others.
