Can't believe I am actually going to agree with Thomas M on something, but it is a shame Awad was deported - actually denied renewal of a permanent residency card due to years living abroad and taking foreign citizenship (American).

Your response is unresponsive and absurd. Arafat is the anointed leader of the Palestinians despite not being a resident of Israel. I do not know why Awad was deported, but that fact has nothing to do with the Palestinian failure to embrace him or someone like him as their leader. Mandela led a movement from a prison cell. Gandhi likewise--he spent 2,338 days imprisoned by the British. Awad is not in prison. Awad obviously could be the leader of the Palestinians, and live in Gaza or Ramallah, but he is not. Why not?

Do you have any better answer to my question?
