JHP:

No one loathed or loathes the 2 Clintons more than I (hokay, Kollmnh does) but I reserve a special seat in the 7th basement of Hell for Lyndon Baines Johnson. I sat in Hong Kong a few years ago preparing for a weekend trip to Hanoi and read a military history of the Vietnam War, focussing on the materiel and men who were wasted, and was astounded. Add in the American culture and values which were destroyed (Ken Kesey died the other day and is still lionized for his "merry prankster" deeds, which included putting LSD into drinks for the unsuspecting, yada yada yada), the total setback to the economy, capital formation, research and development, the lost years of the 1970s (Jimmy Carter, we hardly knew ye, and for that we can be happy, could only be happier if we'd never known ye), and one is almost tempted to put LBJ in the pantheon of weak-willed evil inhabited by South American dictators.

But, enough holding back, let me tell you how I really feel about LBJ . . .

(Naw, forget it--that would be just too bleak.)

I think Johnson was concerned that all of SE Asia would fall to communism. At least, that's one theory.
