That does not explain why 99+% of people agree with killing the fetus if the mother might otherwise die. Why would people who believe the fetus is a person use your "self defense" argument to kill the fetus rather than the mother. With such an overwhelming percentage, one would think there would be an overwhelming answer.

I didn't say that 99+% of people who view the fetus as a person would be against outlawing it but rather 99+% of all Americans (well really I just said people but I wasn't referring to other countries). I also didn't say that all people who would be against outlawing abortion in those circumstances would have this opinion for that reason. I just submitted it as one possible reason. I mentioned two others, and all 3 together were not meant to be an exhaustive list, just ideas that came to mind right away.

The argument about killing the fetus rather then the mother is that if the pregnancy is killing the woman then the fetus is killing the woman. If the abortion was for reasons of saving the mother's life then it can reasonably be argued that it is killing in self defense. I am not talking about a case where the mother was going to abort the child for some other reason and defense of the child would be an issue.

I have never heard a pro life person argue their case because "maybe" the fetus is human, and therefore
"maybe" we shouldn't abort it.

I would use maybe in this context in a similar way to how I might say "maybe the sun will rise tomorrow morning". Most people wouldn't bother to look at the minuscule doubt. They may have such doubt if they really think about it but most of the time it isn't useful to go around doubting everything. The doubt in this case in my mind is mostly a recognition that I am not perfectly wise or omniscient. I can't do more then guess what levels of doubt other people might have.
