If the abortion was for reasons of saving the mother's life then it can reasonably be argued that it is killing in self defense

Why do you argue a self defence case for the mother but not for the fetus? If a mother intends to kill a child for ANY reason, then why cannot the fetus be protected under self defense. Why do almost 100% of people either ignore the rights of the fetus to self defense, or deny the rights of the fetus to self defence. The way you put it, it seems arbitrary--yet it seems overwhelmingly arbitrary in one particular direction. I am just having a hard time grasping whatever it is you are implying by attaching the "self defense" justification to the mother, but ignoring the right of the fetus to having her life defended.
