I used the phrase "in the guise of constructive criticism". Does this mean that there is no such thing as constructive criticism? No. It means that one can pretend to be engaging in construct criticism, and be destructive. For example, parents who nitpick constantly are supposedly just trying to be helpful, instead of undermining their children's confidence, depriving them of affection, making them ridiculously self- conscious, and generally being annoying. They may even think they are being constructive. But they are not. Advice and correction should be underlyingly supportive: restrained, evincing encouragement and confidence about the ability to improve, liberally mixed with praise for accomplishment, tactful, and so forth........
