I think that the "imaginary friend" applies only to that subset of theists whose deity communicates with them and gets involved in their personal lives. Not all theists subscribe to a personal god. Maybe. I guess it depends on the definition. Theism is usually discribed as different from deism in that it is the belief in a personal God. dictionary.com Belief in the existence of a god or gods, especially belief in a personal God as creator and ruler of the world.
