Just a little studies on the concept of"civilization"...

....would reveal that said civilization is a conscious voluntary choice made by societies who normally don't have to worry about being threatened with their destruction from uncivilized people.

And since choosing to be civilized is strictly voluntary, so is the choice to deal with one's enemies in a manner which they would deal with you.

I think of civilization, and the path of humanity towards true peace and equality, as the "gear shift" of human progress. Every nation is in a different gear, and once in a while you're forced to "grind 'em", and deal with certain obstacles bent upon colliding with you.

Once you've dealt with the obstacle, and then shift back into a higher gear and carry on you way.

Btw, I suggest you read Thucydides and his "history of the Peleponnesian War":

"the weak suffer what they must" when their interests collide with those of the strong. "Questions of justice," consequently, "arise only between equals."

And right now, we're in a war to see who's stronger, Islamic Fundamentalism, or Western values.

And it's not about to end with Afghanistan.
