U.S. accuses Taliban of mass murder and rape
In order to consolidate its rule in Afghanistan, the Taliban executed children, raped women and hung men
on streetlights during its now crumbling grip on power, according to a report by the U.S. government.

U.S. media reports said on Friday said the U.S. government
compiled the information from human rights organizations and press stories in recent weeks.

Examples of the alleged atrocities include the execution of eight boys because they were laughing at Taliban soldiers, setting families on fire for refusing to support the regime, and the hanging of more than 100 men on street lamps.

The U.S. report, also released in London and Islamabad, lists 22 massacres as part of an effort to win the propaganda war and to convince Taliban sympathizers of the brutal nature of the militia.

In 1998, the report says, the Taliban massacred 600 Uzbek
villagers. In the same year when it captured the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, the militia executed men and boys and raped women.
