Stop the presses. I agree with you about something: phone services!

But surely you must realize that many criticisms, including yours, about the phone system can also be applied to Microsoft. Systems designed by capitalists are invariably engineered to maximize profits. Fine. In a free market, the rigours of competition usually dictate that empowering the consumer will maximize profit. But in the case of monopolists, profit is maximized by maintaining the monopoly, and by leveraging that monopoly to monopolize new markets. Rarely does this involve any benefit to the consumer.

(EDIT: That's why we have antitrust laws).
