It's DC corruption at its slimiest to us, Hawk, we simply do not have the wherewithal to grease Washington palms to the degree that the yaller pine lobby is able ... though i have heard that nine [9] DC law firms are getting cheques from us currently, i suspect they are not the best-connected ones, because hey we're under heavy tariff [q.e.d.] ... i hear what you're saying, it's part of the 'democratic process' there, and lord knows the concept is not unknown here - ask me on a more appropriate thread about Shawinigate some time ... feel free to ask as well about the Incredibly Spineless Political Class we currently enjoy as federal rulers - they didn't have the jam to reciprocate in kind and in good speed - the day that first 19.3% was slapped on in August i would have in the same hour said ok, everything of US provenance coming north pays 19.3% duty, cash in front, no exceptions period, plus while we're waiting to see how those sleazeballs like them apples, we've got our hand ready on the oil&gas tap - do they want free trade or don't they, we shall now see

Legend here has it that your politics operate on a system of checks and balances, yet we see no check on this matter, no balance, all we see is that great bloody jackboot ... and that's the way it will be until the US public wakes up to what they're doing

Here's just one of the great ironies in this - we've got a new government in this province, in the spring we kicked out the socialist cabal that we had been under for nine years, and we're primed for positive change ... a good deal of that change will come in the very stumpage system that the DC sleazeballs use in their propaganda - nobody likes that Comparative Value Pricing system, nobody ... [no one can understand it either, btw] ... it is open to gaming through a variety of methods, including the notorious grade-setting, and it has been responsible for both incredibly high and inexplicably low stumpages [yes, so extremely high in some cases that companies could not harvest at the peak of the market of '93-'95 when anything could be sold for big money] ..... it's history ... and we're not going back to the pre-'87 Residual Value either, something new is coming, and it will be far more market oriented ... which is what that slave-state gang says it wants, however -

Got to separate fact from fiction with that bunch, what they say they want and what they want are two entirely distinct scenarios - we have had them on our case for many years, and know them well ... their interests are served best in the near term by shutting us out of the continental economy, period ... even a ten per cent penalty would do much of this, it's a highly competitive business, very cyclical, if you can't keep going in the hard times then you're not there for the good times

Anyway, if you'd like to discuss this feel free to come over to FO vs Cuddlies - #Subject-51596 .... Ken may not like too much of this here [though i do present it as microcosm of how 'Foreign Affairs' actually feel to the victims on the ground] [and yes Ken i just saw your post - i shall keep it in my pants as long as others do the same] [really don't know why Jim flipped out like that, it certainly was not my intent to insult him in that first post] [but don't worry about Ron, he and i are ancient allies of the olden days on the silly-bugger non-reporting scam threads, so though we differ radically on things like the possible existence of rational justification for the FO wars against the vietmanese and the nicaragüenses etc etc, we shall do so according to the Geneva Convention] ..... cheers

The US lobby of lumber barons has much to do with Washington looking after "good old boys" like former president Jimmy Carter. He owns wood lots and mills that haven't been upgraded since the 1960's. No wonder he can't compete against Canadian lumber produced in the most modern and productive mills in the world. In fact, by not investing in modernizing or replacing his board mills to stay competative on the world stage, he no longer deserves to be in business. American can't hide behind a strong dollar and tarrifs forever. Sooner or later America is going to have to become more productive and competative and this will mean investing in modernization to put America back on a competative footing. Unfortunately, it probably won't happen until the almighty US buck falls out of bed. IMO, the US dollar has been way over valued for too long.
