I think what happened between then and now was the discovery of more advanced techniques to make SOI more of a worth-while project. If you actually think about it, the research they are showing off now isn't the result of a short term discovery - Intel must have been working on this for a long time, even back when they were saying that IBM's SOI process would have limitations at smaller geometries. Back when IBM was showing it off, I can believe that Intel felt differently, but now I think the more likely scenario is that Intel's research is bringing SOI into mainstream, while AMD's is relying on an implementation that will become obsolete in future generations. I don't think SOI is a technology that has much use now, though in the future, it will require a combinations of more advanced techniques to allow for newer generations of manufacturing. wbmw

kap, wbmw is a smart guy, I think he will concede that Intel just blew it with SOI. My worry is that with their $$$ ( and AMD's procrastination ) they may have SOI out before AMD does. C

i think the original paper was published in int. symp on vlsi tech. there is a more recent paper in nov. jssc. it seems as late as june'01 some people at intel thought that soi benefits got reduced as feature size got smaller. i think it was a political issue to reject soi and someone was trying to generate a justification. it is at least a large part of intel doesn't know what the rest is doing in terms of future process development. such is the benefits of a near monopoly which can afford parallel redundant research.
