LAM Research sees more capacity from chip makers
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Nov 28 (Reuters) - Lam Research Corp. (NasdaqNM:LRCX - news) , which makes equipment to build semiconductors, said Wednesday some of its foundry customers were increasing capacity, but it was uncertain whether the upturn was the start of a recovery or just a blip.

``We are seeing a number of foundries add incremental capacity, but it is still a weak environment with no strong uptick,'' Chief Operating Officer Steve Newberry said during a presentation at the Credit Suisse First Boston Technology Conference here.

``I think some of the signs are starting to get a little encouraging in terms of what customers will do in the short term.''

Newberry said some of the foundries it sells chip making equipment to have recently increase their capacity from the 50 percent to 60 percent range up to the 80 percent range.

But he stressed the company remained cautious and that the higher capacity trend observed was not yet enough to improve its results materially. Newberry said the company continues to believe a sustained recovery will not come before the second half of next year, but remarked that the situation was ``very fluid.''
