The most amazing thing about this is how the writer's job has transformed. A friend of mine is a freelance literary agent. He says that they make more money on the film and marketing deals now than they do on the books themselves, which is quite a switch from 10-20 years ago. Basically, if you want to be a good writer...stick to literature. If you want to be a wealthy one...create some marketable characters, loop a decent story line around them, make sure you can lock up the film deals as you're writing it and be sure that you take a chunk of the merchandising fees. All in all, however, I'm quite impressed with the whole Harry Potter thing. They are well written and have good morals at the end. I like the way she has taken some common sense and put it down on paper in a simple format. Some of my favorite parts: 1. There is no right or wrong, only power (this is clearly NOT a good moral, but was uttered by Harry's nemesis). 2. Who we are isn't determined by what we are able to do, but by the choices we make. There are a number of others, but these are the 2 that really stuck with me.
