And the government employees unions are totally naive when it comes to lobbying for fat contracts.

The reason airport security is provided by private companies is they do such a great job of lobbying to keep these lucrative contracts.

Consider 911, was any failure of private companies responsible. None of the items used by the scum who hijacked the planes was illegal to carry on to the plane. The policies of the companies was based upon the judgement that one would corporate with hijackers and not offer resistance. So using the policies in place 911 occurred.

Who was and is responsible for looking out for scum who organize to commit mass murder. That's the function of the Federal government. Are there indicators that a lack of communications in the government and the policies of scaling back intelligence led up to this intelligence disaster. I say yes and setting up airport security is a process and the process can function and has functioned well in the hands of private companies.

911 was 0% private sector failure and 100% government intel failure. Simple locks or hardened doors to the cockpit and a policy of not allowing access to the cockpit would have prevented the crashing of the planes into valuable targets.

The only real danger to air travel is bombs. The only way to reduce the threat of bombs is with technology. The only way to screen hundreds of thousands of people is with technology. All the added checkin stuff done so far has done little to make flying any safer.

The restriction to the cockpit and the fact that knowing Americans will fight to the death on a hijacked plane make a 911 event a virtual non possibility. A multi hijack with bombs to destroy several planes still has some possibility. But the focus of the FBI on the terrorist organization has most likely led to an inability of these wacko's to create a master plan. SO I'd say flying is very safe again.

The baggage handlers and checkin security as humans who inspect will never be foolproof. Technology assistance can increase the effectiveness of the screening by orders of magnitude. But there is no 100%.

You are catching on that some of Government Officials are more concerned about corporate America and it's lobbyists feeding their coffers than American citizens and most of those folks are aligned with a party that's name starts with an R
