PC manufacturers seem to go through quality and crap periods. I had a Gateway in 1995 that ran like a top for two years then disintegrated component by component in the third year.

I bought a Micron next because I had bought some for my office and liked the quality. It ran well for three years - but my wife bought a Micron a year later and it was real crap, hardware and software problems.

Now I would only buy a DELL for a top-line machine. I have a Compaq Presario as my second PC for trading and it is fine for a $1000 machine.

You couldn't pay me to go back to a Gateway now. My father had a couple with endless problems and moved to Dell for his latest machine too.

I don't see GTW surviving the commodity era of PC manufacturing.
