I agree with William Safire.

I also find the response of (paraphrased) 'this would only apply to non-US citizens' to be a hollow rationalization. If we truly believe in the principles behind our judicial system, we should apply them equally, citizen or not.

I am not so worried about the guilty ones, but in these emotional times, what are the chances that someone doesn't get a fair trial because they don't look right?

Political expediency should not overshadow justice.

I think that this military tribunal question is too important to have received so little pre-decisional debate. The worst thing about it was the way it was just dumped on us. Now we have a policy and opposition to the policy. Pro vs. con. That's not conducive to discussion. I can see both sides. And I don't find either sufficiently thoughtful.

There are very good reasons why Bush wants the tribunals rather than open court. It would be better if the reasons were stated and other options were discussed for meeting the special criteria this situation presents. I don't have enough knowledge of the court systems to offer an alternative, but I'll bet that there is one.
