in general it is questionable if sse/sse2 helped intel at all. So far intel is squizing everything out of their market domination.
Introducing i(x)86-64 may actually help amd. If someone would decide to go x86-64 solution they would have to consider for how long intel would support it. After all it might make sense for intel to cut out their support for x86-64 in favor of ia64 sometime in the near future.
AMD OTOH would support their version.
