If any one is interested their is a report out today available via link on clec.com on the state of the clec industry. It seems very clear that McLeodUSA is going to be a long term survivor in this industry. They are shedding non core assets and increasing margins. Contrary to the ramblings I occassionaly read their customer service is one of the best in the industry and has been verified via 3rd party (see JD Powers on telecom). Their sales are increasing at a very good clip. They have rid themselves largely of non perfoming upper management (see Roy Wilkens, the former CFO, et all). Contrary to rumours they show no signs of going bankrupt and seem to have a good relationship with the banking industry and should be one of the few in this industry that can count on additional funding if needed. I think over the next few years you will see McLeod make some aquistions. I find it hard to believe that in an industry with revenues approaching 100 billion annually that McLeodUSA is priced this low. If you remember back when LD was deregulated this happened too. The largest competitors kept getting bigger and bigger over time. They became Sprint and MCIWorldcom. I think over time you will see the same thing happen to McLeod. If not McLeod then who else will be the biggest CLEC in five years? With an growing revenues for the future and a head start on most competitors I see McLeod as a risk but a strong buy at these prices.
