Elmer, OMG, what better business reason is there? ( killing your competition is goal # 1 - as long as you survive of course ). MMX was integer based . PII was king on floating point and there was no need for SSE. 3Dnow came out and then SSE appeared almost a year later. SSE2 was probably conceived at the same time as SSE. AMD has no choice but to copy/emulate Intel's extensions. If you don't see that then you live in a fantasy world.
