I see what you mean. Maybe "forced" was the wrong word, since most would embrace a materialistic authority that promised them prosperity. Still, I see a difference in authority that is commanded and adhered to only due to fears/hopes regarding materialism..vs..authority that is respected/disrespected due to its integrity in principle.

Example Classroom teacher posts a rule about keeping your hands off other student's supplies. One authority figure could be viewed both ways. You might respect the rules of the classroom and not steal a classmates pencil because in principle you view this as immoral behavior; while I decide not to steal the pencil because I don't want to go to jail over the fight that could ensue.
