My LAX experience was very bad too. But yours was a total nightmare....

I still can't get over this:

>>As I took my seat I noticed a tear in my son’s eye. He is six, but usually not much of a whiner most of the time....and he loves airplanes....so I wondered why he was upset. It turned out that when he went through security, his plastic Buzz Lightyear toy was inspected ..... and the security guy said that the plastic “rocket pack”---a small decorative rounded piece of red see-through plastic about three inches or so high – was a dangerous item because it might contain some sort of real explosive. And so...in front of my son....the security agent had snapped the toy in two.....thrown away the red piece....and handed the remainder, jagged edges and all, back to my son. I placated him by telling him that we would buy him another, and then by getting him to look out the window as we flew over the Pacific coast just after take off, but I thought to myself.....I am all in favor of security, but this is not advancing the goal of security at all.<<

OMD you are an excellent writer, I think your story merits a letter to the LA Times (maybe the editorial page).

LAX is indeed seems to be a precursor of where we DO NOT want to go with airport security.

BTW, welcome back!

just as the final page requesting my immediate presence at the gate was announced.

I can just see it...."Original Mad Dog, get yer ass over here, NOW!!" <gg>

Thanks! for the report. Quite interesting...

OMD -

Your experience at LAX demonstrate what is wrong with the current approach to airport security. It's just unbelieveable that someone would break a kid's toy based on the assumption that it could be used to hide explosives. Hell, if someone was going to try to smuggle explosives onto a plane, I suspect there are better ways to do it than hiding it in a toy being carried by a six-year-old boy.

I'd suggest you take a few minutes to draft up a letter of complaint to the Presidents of the airline (UAL?) and the security company. It probably won't do much good, but might give you the satisfaction of knowing that you tried to rattle their cages.

Holy cow am I glad I wasn't in line behind your son. I would still be in jail but I can promise you that retarded sack of shit wouldn't be breaking any toys in future. UFB!!!

wow! I can't believe that the security guard did that to your son's toy. That just seems flat out cruel. Hopefully he is the guy who loses his job when they have cutbacks because people stopped flying because of hassles.

What an incredible story. So well written. Thank you for writing it. I think it deserves a wider audience than just this thread. I have no idea who to send it to, but I hope you do.
