it could be solved with a simple BIOS upgrade and was in no way indicative of a fundamental flaw in the systems / processors

Well, my BIOS allows me to disable my processor's L1 cache. The system takes about ten minutes to boot up with this setting. I would certainly consider it a fundamental flaw if I had to run my system without the cache.

That is why I am surprised that you equate BIOS patch with absence of a flaw in the processor. It could just be a tweak to a clock setting but more likely it is a flag that disables the malfunctioning path through the processor.

(Incidentally, if anyone else has a problem with stability of their Athlon, but it boots OK with the cache disabled, it is probably because they haven't used enough thermal paste and there are hot spots - been rock solid since I re-seated the heat sink :^)
