PT, "..trying each of the two sticks of SDRAM on its own to no avail."

??? Could you elaborate in English please?

To narrow down your problem, I recommend to run these
"burn-in" programms, BURNBX in particular:
users.ev1.net

If this is a memory/northbridge problem, you should be
able to see it rather quickly.

Also, try to overclock your FSB/memory system by 5-10%,
and see if the rate of error is higher. If it does not
overclock by that amount, trash your mainboard.

Also, try to run any big system benchmark, BAPCO or
Winstone, old or new-does not matter. If your system
is incapable to complete the benchmark without an
error, you have a problem. Try to disable bus-mastering
on your drive and CDROM. Try to disable audio.

PT, I would suggest running the memory diagnostic memtest86 version 2.8 available from memtest86.com
I found that my system would give errors with CAS set to 2, even though I wasn't getting any crashes.

Each time you make a change to your system, rerun it and see if the errors go away.

A quicker test is to run Super-Pi after each change. It's pretty sensitive to errors, but not as good as memtest86. Look on download.com for Super-Pi.

As for cooling, problems can occur even on a lowly system, like my son's 650 MHz Duron PC. It was booting successfully only every 3rd time it was turned on and I thought the venerable FIC-11 motherboard was dying. But after blowing the wads of dust out of the heatsink, it ran like new again.

ptanner, please post your hardware setup. Also, have you installed any new software/hardware recently? I've built MANY Athlon and Intel systems so I am sure we can figure it out.

p.s.
How much did you overclock this system?
