So they are misleading customers like you.

Oh c'mon.. They would never do such a thing.. would they?

Let's see.. let's create a new OS that nobody really needs, and that is the one we will coerce the box makers into including with every new system. Nobody with an old box will be able to use it, and of course their old software won't be able to easily share files, etc, with the people who have new boxes and software. So of course everyone will eventually be worn down and want to upgrade their old software, not for the wonderful new features they don't need.. just to be compatible. We'll sell them the new stuff designed to run with the new OS that will only run on a new box... yada yada yada.

It's called stimulating the economy, and it is really a good thing for all of us.. right?

I wish I had seen that a couple of weeks ago before I upgraded my 1998 dell dimension 450 to xp. No wonder I've been struggling with minor bits and pieces that don't run as well as I would like. I've got it up and running now and as a matter of fact got the highest scores at the pcpitstop site that I've ever gotten testing this machine. That came as a complete surprise. I've been trying to find an updated driver from dell for my video card but I guess I can quit worrying about that. One of my problems seems to have been cured (maybe I should say put in remission) by lowering my color to 16 mil from 32. My sound cards driver will not operate with all functions but I can live with it. Thanks again for the info.

I have a Dell XPS R450 purchased in Nov' 1998. I also have a brand new custom built machine. After getting the new machine running and all my old date transferred I decided to do clean the Dell out. I also ran the Microsoft compatibility and it passed. However I had trouble installing XP. I installed W98 and immediately upgraded to XP. Perfect setup.

This was on a freshly Fdisk and formatted drive, also Dell had a bios upgrade that I used first.

If you are prepared to clean the drive go ahead and try but do not upgrade over your current system, it sounds as if you have already done one upgrade to W98 from a former version.
