PT, I had a Coppermine 1Ghz Win2K system that froze intermittently. As it turned out the ide cable had gotten loose. It was still plugged in the HD but not all the way in. It was a short IDE cable with a bit of tension which over time pulled the plug out enough to cause problems. So you may want to try plugging in your older HD and see if it all of a sudden it works OK again :)
